Resuscitation Guidelines for MPS Patients in Relation to: Choking, Falling, Basic Life Support

There are many standard resuscitation protocols in use to ensure that in an emergency situation all rescuers follow the same procedures. However these protocols are not always appropriate for MPS patients for various reasons such as:
• Risk of neck injury due to cervical instability
• Small chests and enlarged abdominal organs
• Restricted airways

With the agreement of the resuscitation Council (UK) and in consultation with specialist metabolic teams, the intensive care unit at Birmingham Children’s Hospital and the MPS Society this booklet has been developed to take into account these anatomical differences and to provide clear guidance in respect of how to support an individual if they choke, fall or require basic life support.
